Check the plate before you buy anything: a Dyson name on the box can cover more than one version. Serial number on the bottom of the machine.

When to change them

Wash the filter unit at least once a month or when the screen alerts you; dry completely before refitting. (source)

Only rinse a filter the maker says is washable, and let it dry right through before it goes back in. Most of the "it smells" complaints start with a damp filter.

You'll know the battery's going when a full charge stops lasting a whole clean. It happens slowly and creeps up on you.

Cutting out early isn't always the battery. A blocked filter or wand can do the same, and clearing it costs nothing.
